More than one Katy family keeps a grandmother's Persian rolled up in a hall closet, sometimes for years, because nobody wants to be the one who ruins it. That's a common pattern with hand-knotted rugs. People either leave them alone until the dust is visible in the pile, or they hand them to whoever is cheapest and hope.
Neither works out well. An oriental rug is wool or silk knotted onto a cotton foundation, and the dyes might be stable modern ones or old vegetable dyes that run the moment they get wet. Clean it right and it'll look better than it has in years. Clean it like wall-to-wall carpet and you can bleed the reds into the ivory in an afternoon.

A hand-knotted rug's foundation never gets soaked, so there's no shrinking, no browning along the cotton warp, and no long dry time with a damp rug sitting on your hardwood.
One more thing worth knowing: the floor under the rug matters. A hand-knotted rug on hardwood or tile should sit on a decent rug pad, which keeps it from sliding and takes some of the grinding wear off the back of the knots. If yours has none, or the pad has crumbled, we'll say so.
The steps, in order
Identification
Before any product touches the rug, your technician works out the fiber, the weave, and how stable the dyes are. A spot test on each major color tells us whether anything is going to move. If the dyes look fugitive, we'll tell you so and stop there.
Dry soil removal
Hand-knotted rugs hold a surprising amount of grit deep at the base of the knots. We get that loose dry soil out first, with equipment that vibrates it up out of the pile, so it doesn't turn to mud during the cleaning.
Spot care
Food, wine, mud, and pet accidents each get worked individually with a residue-free pre-treatment.
The cleaning pass
A low-moisture clean lifts the oily soil and allergens out of the wool. Odor-causing bacteria get treated here too, which matters if a dog or cat has had an accident on the rug.
Drying
With so little water involved, the rug dries quickly and evenly. Even drying is what prevents the bleeding and mildew that give rug cleaning a bad name.
Grooming
The pile gets brushed back in the direction of the nap, the fringe gets cleaned by hand, and we inspect the whole rug with you before we leave.
Rugs we handle
Persian, Turkish, Afghan, Pakistani, and Indian rugs are all regulars, along with Chinese silk and wool-and-silk pieces. Hand-knotted and hand-woven rugs, cotton flatweaves, antiques, and collector pieces get the same careful identification step. Machine-made "oriental style" rugs from a furniture store are cleaned too, though those are tougher and usually fall under our regular area rug cleaning.
Signs it's time
You don't have to wait for a visible stain. Run your hand against the pile and look at your palm. Gray dust means the base of the knots is loaded with grit, and that grit cuts the wool every time someone walks across it. Colors that look flat or muddy, a faint musty smell on damp days, and fringe that has gone yellow-gray are all signs too.
Silk deserves its own mention. Silk and wool-and-silk rugs are beautiful and easy to damage, and the sheen is the first thing to go when somebody cleans them too aggressively. We take them slower, test every color, and work with even less moisture than usual.
One opinion we hold firmly
Never run a rental carpet machine or a home steam cleaner over a hand-knotted rug. We see the results every year. The machine pumps hot water straight through to the foundation, the cotton shrinks unevenly, the rug ripples, and any fugitive dye walks into the lighter field around it. A rug can live through a lot of dirt. It usually doesn't live through that.
Vacuum it weekly with the beater bar off, rotate it every year or so (a front room in Katy takes a lot of hard afternoon sun through those tall windows), and have it professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months. A rug in a dining room with kids and a dog under the table can go a bit more often.
What we can't do
We clean rugs. We don't repair them. Loose fringe, worn spots where the foundation shows through, moth damage, and holes all need a rug repair specialist, and we'll tell you honestly when a rug is past what cleaning can help. The same goes for color that already bled in an earlier cleaning somewhere else. Cleaning can brighten the rug around it, but the bleed itself is set into the fiber.
If your rug has a pet urine problem that's gone deep into the knots, the pet odor and stain removal treatment can be added to the visit. Expect the odor to improve more than the stain; old yellowing in wool rarely clears completely.
