Best Ways to Keep Your Home Smelling Fresh with Pets Around

Most of the pet smell in a house has nothing to do with accidents. It comes from skin oil and dander, plus drool, plus the bed your dog has been sleeping on since spring. None of it is dramatic. It builds up slowly, and the people who live there stop noticing it long before guests do.

So this post skips the emergency stuff. If you're dealing with a urine spot right now, go read our pet odor and stain removal guide first. What follows is the everyday side.

Start with what your pet sleeps on

The dog bed is usually the smelliest object in the house, and it's often sitting on carpet. Buy beds with removable, machine-washable covers, and keep two so one is always in the wash. Every week is a good rhythm. Fragrance-free detergent works fine; perfumed detergent just gives you a dog bed that smells like flowers and dog.

Blankets on the couch count too. If your pets are allowed on the furniture, a washable throw over their favorite cushion is a lot easier to clean than the cushion.

Grooming does more than any spray

Every time your dog shakes, rolls on the rug, or leans against the sofa, some oil and loose dander goes with it. Brushing outside a couple of times a week keeps that out of your carpet entirely. Regular baths help, though how often depends on the breed, so ask your vet or groomer.

Keep an old towel by the back door. A Katy summer means afternoon storms and dogs who come in muddy to the elbows, and thirty seconds of paw wiping saves the hallway carpet a lot of grief. Trimmed nails snag fewer carpet loops, too.

Give the air somewhere to go

From about May through October most Katy houses are closed up tight with the AC running. That's great for comfort and bad for odor, because whatever is in the air just circulates. Change your HVAC filter on schedule, and more often with heavy shedders. A HEPA air purifier in the room where the pets spend the most time catches dander before it settles.

Moisture matters here. Odor-causing bacteria do better in damp air, so if your indoor humidity regularly sits above 50 percent, a dehumidifier is worth the money. On the few mild days we get, open the windows and let the house breathe.

We're not big fans of plug-in air fresheners. All they do is add a second smell on top of the first, and in our experience the combination is worse than either one.

Draw lines on the floor plan

Pets don't need access to every room. In a lot of two-story Katy homes the downstairs is tile and the bedrooms and game room upstairs are carpeted, which makes a natural split. Keep food bowls, crates, and the main hangout spot on hard floors, and the carpet stays cleaner without you doing anything.

If you have cats, the litter box placement matters more than the brand of litter. Put it on tile or vinyl, scoop daily, and wash the box itself every week or so. A litter box on carpet will eventually be a carpet problem.

Area rugs in pet zones should be ones you can shake out on the porch and rotate. Moving a rug a few feet now and then spreads the wear around.

When the habits stop being enough

Vacuum the pet areas two or three times a week with a HEPA vacuum, and go slowly, because dander needs more than one quick pass. That handles the surface. What it can't touch is the oily film that builds up in the lower part of the fibers over months, and that film is what holds the faint "dog house" smell.

For that, plan a full carpet cleaning about once a year, sooner with several pets. Have the furniture done at the same visit if the pets sleep on it, since clean carpet next to a stale sofa still leaves the room smelling like a sofa. Our carpet cleaning dries fast enough that the dog can be back on the floor the same afternoon, and upholstery cleaning handles the cushions. Honestly, though, if your lab sleeps on the couch every night, no cleaning schedule will keep that couch smelling new. The washable throw is doing more work than we are.

When it's time, you can book a slot on our online scheduler. We work all over Katy and out through Fulshear.

Spilled something this morning? We can often come today.

Call the Katy office day or night. Online booking works too, and either way your technician names the price before a single room gets touched, so nothing on the bill surprises you.
